Poker Parties - Three Ways to Avoid the Terror Guest

Poker parties are a fun way to get together with friends and have an evening of exciting action with all the chills and thrills of winning and losing. With some people, this type of evening can lead to unintentional misgivings. The possibility of ruining all the hopes and dreams of a successful or the establishment of a continuous poker party lies in the balance.

Inviting guests has its drawbacks and you never expect the terror guest. A terror guest is someone who comes over to your poker party and during the course of the evening gets loud, obnoxious and possibly violent towards your guests and maybe even you. The reasons are wide ranging and do not make themselves evident early on in the evening, but as the night progresses, you will be able to see and hear them and you need to protect yourself and your guests from this type of person.

The first and most responsible way is to know your guest list. Knowing your guest is a responsibility you as the host take on. Whether you like it or not, you need to act as traffic cop to the guest who gets out of hand. If you know your guests personally, you have much more control over the individuals that show up for your poker party. Letting one of your guests get too drunk or worse yet, allowing drugs and alcohol mixed together at a poker party can lead to disaster.

The second way to avoid the terror guest is to be at the door or have someone you trust at the door when people first arrive. Playing bouncer at your poker party is not fun. I have had to make some hard decisions when it comes to the players allowed into the poker den. You can lose friendships and create enemies, but the ultimate responsibility is yours when you are the person hosting the party.

The third way to avoid the terror guest is to make sure everyone who comes to your poker party knows the limits of what you will tolerate. If you run a consistent poker party or have a poker party every week, you will establish these facts and possibly have a "rules sheet" so everyone will know what is permissible, and what will get them kicked out and never invited back.

Poker parties are found all across America on weekends and during the week and being invited to one is a privilege. Be a great guest and watch your consumption of beverages. You will enjoy your time spent with your friends and remember the next day who won and who lost.
